Taxify, the world’s fastest growing ride-hailing app, has developed a new safety feature, the SOS button, with the goal of safeguarding its driver-partners against violent attacks and hijacks. The SOS button, which is embedded in the Taxify driver app, triggers a distress call to the Lagos State Emergency Response Agency.
According to the company on Tuesday, drivers can now use the additional safety feature whenever they are in areas where they feel insecure or are placed in dangerous situations. The Operations Manager at Taxify, Uche Okafor, said that the integration of the SOS button came on the back of Taxify’s plans to further utilise technology to keep drivers safe on the roads. “At the top of our priority list is ensuring the safety of our drivers and riders.
The safety button will allow Taxify driver-partners access rapid deployment of the correct emergency response, should they find themselves in danger and allow driver-partners connect to emergency help in critical situations,” Okafor said. A driver-partner, Mr. Sulaimon Azeez, told our correspondent that the SOS button was an exciting development for active drivers like himself who previously felt unsafe, especially while driving at night. “This is the best thing to happen to us. Most of my friends who have been reluctant to earn a living through this means, for fear of losing their lives or losing a car that is not theirs, are now willing to join the app as driver-partners,” Azeez said. Another driver, Mr. Femi Olusoga, said, “It’s great to know that there’s a button directly on the app where if I’m ever in a dangerous situation, I can click on, describe the situation and know that someone is on the other end ready to come to my aid.
This is what we’ve been asking for, and we’re happy Taxify has listened.” The introduction of this safety feature comes at a critical time where the competition in the ride-hailing space is stiff and players are heavily competing for both drivers and riders. However, Okafor said, “Over the last few years we’ve led the way with technology-based safety features such Global Positioning System tracking of every trip and our two-way rating system.” He added, “We recognise that we can utilise our technology even further and now that we have integrated the SOS button into the Taxify driver app, we look forward to applying this additional layer of safety to further strengthen driver safety while on the platform.”
