A Police-man shoots an 18 year old secondary school student in Niger

Abdulkarim Labaran Mohammed, an 18-year-old secondary school leaver has been confirmed dead after being shot by a policeman, when policemen and members of the vigilante group were trying to save a suspected ritualist from mob action in Beji community, Niger State.

It was claimed that the ritualist had touched another man who claimed that his manhood disappeared afterwards and raised an alarm which led to the youths descending on the suspect. However, concerned persons alerted the police in Maikunkele Division and Police officers were sent to the scene of the mob.

The team of policemen alongside members of the Vigilante rescued the suspect and put him in their patrol van against the will of the crowd who insisted that justice should be carried out immediately. During which it was reported that one of the policemen tried to shoot into the air to stop the mob but a stray bullet hit the an 18 year old boy who died instantly.

The incident has however led to an uproar and protest by the youths of the community who blocked the main access road which linked Minna with Zungeru.

DSP Muhammed Abubakar, the State Police Command spokesman confirmed the incident  saying that it was not certain that one of his men was responsible for the death of Mohammed but that the remains of the deceased have been deposited at the mortuary of Federal Medical Centre Bida and the man who claimed to have lost his manhood has been admitted and is being treated at the hospital.
