Concerned indigenous people of Benin have taken to the streets to protest over the death of a 6-year old primary school student who was swept away by flood on Monday, thereby blocking Uselu Logos road, in Benin City on Tuesday.
The boy was said to have been on his way home from school with his mother when he slipped, fell into a deep gutter being constructed by the State government around the Textile Mill.
The grieving mother said she was taking her son home when the incident happened. Stating that she held him by the hand but he moved back and fell. She said as she attempted to save her son and the baby baby strapped to her back, she almost fell into the gutter but was rescued by an Hausa man.
Failure of the search party to find the victim’s body after several hours left to protest by youths in the area, who claim that the drainage were not properly constructed.
However, the body of the boy is yet to be found and not a single government agency has responded to lead the search for the young boy to enable family can give him a good burial.
