Ayo Aiyepeku, a photojournalist, was allegedly murdered by his colleague, Adebayo Pelumi, in a gruesome attack on Tuesday night in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital.
The incident occurred in an office near the Government House/GRA area, where both men worked as photographers for an unnamed company.
A source, who requested anonymity for safety reasons, disclosed that Pelumi struck Aiyepeku on the head with a blunt object, rendering him unconscious before dismembering his body and storing the parts in a freezer.
“They were known colleagues and had a professional relationship, so this is shocking,” the source noted, suggesting that the killing may have been ritualistic due to its brutal nature.
The Kogi State Police Command confirmed the incident on Wednesday, July 23, 2025. The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Williams Ovye-Aya, stated that investigations were underway and that the suspect remained at large.
“The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, has been reported to us, and investigation has commenced in earnest,” Ovye-Aya said.
“We are on the trail of the suspected killer to bring him to justice.”
Describing the crime as “very sad and unfortunate,” the PPRO urged the public to assist in locating Pelumi, who was said to be a close friend of the deceased.
“We call on the public to provide any information about the suspect’s whereabouts,” Ovye-Aya added.
Authorities are intensifying efforts to apprehend Pelumi as the community reels from the horrific nature of the crime.
