Cardoso: Women Now Hold 35% of CBN Directorship, Half of Non-Executive Board

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has made significant strides in gender inclusivity, with women now holding 35% of its directorship positions and constituting half of its non-executive board, according to Governor Olayemi Cardoso.

Speaking at the grand finale of the International Women’s Day (IWD) celebrations at the CBN Head Office, Cardoso emphasized the bank’s commitment to gender-balanced leadership, describing it as both an ethical imperative and a strategic necessity.

“The rise of women in leadership at the CBN mirrors a global shift, where skilled and visionary female leaders are reshaping governance,” he said.

The event, which concluded a month-long IWD celebration, also saw the appointment of six new female directors, setting a historic record for female representation at the CBN.

Deputy Governor Emem Usoro, in her remarks, stressed the urgency of accelerating action on gender parity, citing a World Economic Forum report that predicts full gender equality may not be achieved until 2054. She urged institutions to remove structural barriers and create more opportunities for women.

The Inspiring Women Award, an initiative recognizing outstanding female staff across CBN branches, was also a highlight of the event. Out of 806 nominations nationwide, 28 winners were selected, with awardees from branches in Awka, Dutse, Yola, Gombe, Osogbo, Kaduna, Enugu, and Birnin Kebbi.

Deputy Governor Emem Usoro received the Amazon Award from Governor Cardoso for her outstanding leadership, while ten female directors were celebrated as Trailblazers, and 18 others were recognized for their contributions across the bank.
