A group of prominent Nigerians, known as The Patriots, has called on President Bola Tinubu to convene a Constituent Assembly to discuss Nigeria’s constitutional future, warning that the current framework is the root cause of the country’s challenges.
Speaking at the 20th memorial anniversary of legal icon Chief F.R.A. Williams in Lagos, the group’s General Secretary, Olawaye Okuniyi, revealed that during a meeting on August 9, 2024, President Tinubu agreed to their proposal to replace the 1999 Constitution. Tinubu reportedly assured them that he would invite them again for a formal presentation on the matter.
Okuniyi stressed that Nigeria’s stability depends on a legitimate constitution that reflects the will of its people. “Without a legitimate constitution, life in Nigeria will remain brutish and uncertain,” he said, urging the Federal Government to act swiftly.
At the event, The Patriots and other dignitaries paid tribute to Chief Rotimi Williams, a lifelong advocate for constitutional reform. Dr. Tokunbo Dosunmu, Convener of the Awolowo Foundation, described him as a pillar of integrity, while South-East representative Ifeyinwa Ezenwa hailed his contributions to national unity.
Speaking on behalf of the Williams family, Folarin Rotimi-Williams reflected on his father’s enduring legacy, emphasizing his passion for justice and the need for a constitution that truly serves Nigeria.
