The House of Representatives, on Wednesday, passed the second reading of a bill seeking to upgrade Lagos State’s 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) into full-fledged Local Government Areas (LGAs).
Sponsored by James Faleke, Babajimi Benson, Enitan Badru, and 19 other lawmakers, the bill aims to amend the 1999 Constitution to officially recognize the LCDAs as LGAs, increasing Nigeria’s total number of local governments from 774 to 811.
If enacted, Lagos would surpass Kano and Katsina in the number of LGAs, with proponents arguing that the upgrade would enhance governance at the grassroots level. The 37 LCDAs were created in 2003 under then-Governor Bola Tinubu.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State House of Assembly is reportedly considering a separate bill to restructure the LCDAs into new administrative areas.
