Invest in Research To Curb Brain Drain, Prof. Adetunji Urges Nigerian Government

Prof. Charles Adetunji, Director of Research and Innovation at Edo State University, has urged the Nigerian government to prioritize investment in research and development (R&D) as a key strategy to curb brain drain.

Speaking in Abuja, Adetunji stressed the need for modernizing universities and research institutions to equip them for advanced scientific discoveries. He highlighted challenges such as outdated facilities and limited research resources, which hinder innovation among Nigerian scientists and technologists.

“Nigeria must create an environment where skilled professionals can thrive and contribute to national progress instead of seeking opportunities abroad,” he said.

To address this, he advocated for a holistic approach, including policy reforms, improved infrastructure, financial incentives, and greater recognition for researchers. He emphasized the importance of establishing competitive funding mechanisms and ensuring the timely release of research grants.

Adetunji also called for stronger collaboration between the government and private sector to develop funding schemes focused on key sectors such as healthcare, energy, and agriculture. He urged educational institutions to partner with local and international organizations to upgrade laboratories and provide access to global research databases.

To retain talent, he recommended offering competitive salaries, performance-based incentives, and career growth opportunities through international collaborations and conferences. Additionally, he proposed tax incentives for researchers and technology entrepreneurs, enhanced job security in the public sector, and fair competition aligned with global standards.

In conclusion, Adetunji called for a national initiative to upgrade infrastructure in universities, research institutions, and technology hubs, emphasizing that such reforms would significantly enhance Nigeria’s scientific and technological capabilities.
