Canada Calls Snap Elections Amid Trump’s Threats To Sovereignty

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has called early elections for April 28, citing the urgent need to counter Donald Trump’s threats to Canada’s sovereignty and economy.

Carney, a former central banker who recently replaced Justin Trudeau as leader of the centrist Liberal Party, made the announcement on Sunday after requesting Governor General Mary Simon to dissolve Parliament.

“I’m asking Canadians for a strong, positive mandate to deal with President Trump,” Carney said in a national address. “He wants to break us so America can own us. We will not let that happen.”

Meanwhile, the snap election comes as tensions between Canada and the U.S. escalate, with Trump repeatedly dismissing Canada’s borders as artificial and suggesting it should become the 51st U.S. state.

In addition to his sovereignty remarks, Trump has launched a trade war against Canada, imposing tariffs that threaten to disrupt the country’s economy. Carney vowed not to engage with Trump until he acknowledges Canada’s independence.

“We are facing the most significant crisis of our lifetimes due to President Trump’s unjustified trade actions and threats to our sovereignty,” Carney said. “Our response must be to build a strong economy and a more secure Canada.”

While domestic issues like inflation and immigration typically dominate Canadian elections, this campaign is expected to revolve around one key question: Who can best stand up to Trump?

Despite the Liberals’ declining popularity after a decade in power, Carney hopes to rally Canadians around national pride and economic stability in the face of external pressure.

With the election date set for April 28, Canada’s political landscape is poised for a high-stakes battle over its future.
