Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, on Saturday, officially presented certificates and staff of office to 66 newly appointed traditional rulers at the Government House in Owerri.
During the ceremony, the governor urged the monarchs to lead with honesty, peace, and justice, cautioning them against treating their subjects as subordinates.
He also warned against ruling their communities from outside the state, emphasizing that any ruler who fails to reside and manage security in their domain risks being removed.
“You are recognised to support local government chairmen and councillors in maintaining law and order in our communities,” Uzodimma stated, adding that traditional rulers must collaborate with vigilante groups and youths to safeguard their people.
He further advised them against being used to undermine his administration, insisting that any opposition to the government should be done openly rather than through manipulation of community leadership.
Responding on behalf of the newly installed monarchs, Prof. Peter Nnabuo, the traditional ruler of Umuezeala/Umueme Community in Oru East LGA, assured the governor of their commitment to peace and security. Other newly appointed rulers also expressed gratitude and pledged to uphold their responsibilities for the benefit of their people.
