The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, has announced that the Federal Government will clear 500 hectares of land in Benue State to boost ranching and dairy production.
Speaking on Saturday at the Benue Livestock Investigation and Breeding Centre in Raav, Gwer East LGA, Maiha said the 2,400 hectares allocated to the centre was sufficient for large-scale livestock development, with initial clearing set for 500 hectares.
He lamented the centre’s underutilization, with only 37 animals currently on-site, and emphasized the need for rehabilitation.
Also, a committee will be formed to recommend necessary facilities, including pens, isolation centres, and housing.
The minister also revealed plans for collaboration with Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi, for research.
Director-General of the Benue Bureau for Livestock Development, Dr. Aondoakaa Asambe, welcomed the initiative, noting it aligns with the state’s vision for a structured livestock industry to enhance security and economic growth.
