A intense but silent feud is unfolding between the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, over allegations of a plot to dethrone the Oluwo.
Reportedly on Friday night. the Oluwo accused the Ooni of seeking his downfall, despite his role in helping him ascend the throne. He claimed that he facilitated key meetings that led to Oba Ogunwusi’s emergence as Ooni, but now faces betrayal and efforts to undermine his rule.
“The same person I helped to the throne has been planning evil against me,” Oluwo alleged, citing his suspension from the Osun State Council of Obas and attempts to destabilize his leadership.
He also accused the Ooni of supporting his former wife against him and vowed that no one could remove him as Oluwo.
However, in response, the Ooni’s media director, Otunba Moses Olafare, dismissed the accusations, stating that Oba Ogunwusi bears no ill will toward Oluwo.
He also revealed that the Ooni had financially supported Oluwo’s kingship bid and only advised him at a recent council meeting to respect other monarchs’ religious beliefs.
The conflict highlights deepening divisions among Yoruba traditional rulers, with tensions threatening to escalate further.
