The Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) has stated that it will not take a position on President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, emphasizing its role as a neutral platform for policy collaboration and governance.
In a statement on Saturday, NGF Director General Abdulateef Shittu explained that taking sides on divisive political issues would contradict the forum’s purpose and history.
Rivers State has been embroiled in a political crisis for nearly two years, with a power struggle between former Governor Nyesom Wike and his successor, Sim Fubara, leading to a governance deadlock.
In response, Tinubu declared a state of emergency on Tuesday, suspending Governor Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all state lawmakers for six months. Retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas was appointed as the sole administrator.
The NGF urged understanding from the public and media, expressing confidence that proper crisis management measures would resolve the situation.
“The Forum elects to steer clear of taking positions that may alienate members with varying political interests,” the statement read. “However, we remain committed to advocating for key governance and policy matters such as wages, taxes, education, and healthcare.”
The NGF, a coalition of governors from diverse political backgrounds, has previously survived divisions caused by political differences.
