Edo State Deputy Governor, Dennis Idahosa, has reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to agricultural development, assuring farmers of strong government support and security.
Speaking in Benin City while hosting executives of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Edo State Chapter, Idahosa highlighted the Okpebholo-led administration’s focus on agriculture as part of its five-point agenda.
“For the first time in Edo’s history, we have over N70 billion allocated to agriculture in our budget,” Idahosa stated. “Food security is a priority, and we are determined to make Edo a top-ranking state in agricultural production.”
He acknowledged the state’s fertile land and potential to boost its GDP, stressing that agriculture was once Nigeria’s major revenue source before crude oil discovery.
“In line with President Tinubu’s directive for states to focus on agriculture, Edo is set to lead in agricultural production and agribusiness,” he added.
Furthermore, the deputy governor assured farmers of collaboration between the government and AFAN to enhance agricultural productivity. He also addressed security concerns, pledging efforts to resolve farmers-herders clashes in collaboration with security agencies.
“Farmers can now return to their farms without fear. Their safety and that of their families remain a top priority,” he assured.
In response, AFAN Chairman, Alhaji Ebiredelu Dogwo Bako, commended the administration’s efforts and its support in providing large-scale inputs to farmers. He also sought further collaboration to address challenges facing farmers, including insecurity.
