Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai have officially launched a coalition of opposition leaders to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday at the Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, Atiku confirmed the formation of the coalition, emphasizing the need for unity among opposition parties to remove the All Progressives Congress (APC) from power.
“This is the birth of the coalition of opposition ahead of 2027,” Atiku declared, flanked by key opposition figures.
Peter Obi, represented by Obidient Movement’s Interim National Coordinator Yunusa Tanko, echoed the sentiment, stating that the coalition’s goal is to address governance issues and liberate Nigerians from economic and political hardship.
The coalition has gained momentum following El-Rufai’s defection from the APC to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) on March 10. Discussions among opposition figures, including former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal and National Secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties Peter Ameh, have intensified, though the coalition’s name and platform remain undecided.
While absent, APC figures such as former governors Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers) and Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), along with former APC National Chairman Abdullahi Adamu, reportedly sent apologies, signaling their potential involvement.
Opposition leaders stress that the coalition will focus on critical national issues, including security, education, and economic reforms, with further details on structure and leadership to be announced soon.
