Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Ibadan outer city zone have called on Governor Seyi Makinde to take urgent and proactive steps to prevent and manage disasters in Oyo State.
Expressing concerns over the increasing cases of market fires, industrial accidents, flooding, explosions, and road mishaps, the stakeholders urged the state government to act swiftly to curb the trend.
During their quarterly meeting at the APC Secretariat in Egbeda Local Government, party leaders and executives from Akinyele, Egbeda, Ido, Lagelu, Oluyole, and Ona-Ara lamented the recent fire outbreak at Aleshinloye Market, which left traders devastated by massive losses.
In a communique signed by Alhaji Kamorudeen Ajisafe, Alhaji Isiaka Alimi, and Bashorun Billy Ogundele, the group criticized the Makinde administration for its failure to prevent or effectively manage the incident.
“The Aleshinloye Market fire was one inferno too many, leaving victims in agony. The government must take responsibility and implement concrete measures to prevent such disasters,” the statement read.
The stakeholders also questioned the alleged fraudulent procurement of 10 fire trucks from Turkey in 2020, stating that their absence had worsened emergency response efforts.
They urged the governor to seek expert advice, invest in modern fire safety equipment, and properly train emergency responders. Additionally, they called on him to reconsider plans to displace traders under the guise of market remodeling, citing concerns over transparency in the initiative.
