Popular Nigerian rapper and activist Falz has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s decision to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State and suspend its elected governor.
On Tuesday, Tinubu announced the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all elected members of the State House of Assembly for six months, citing political instability. He appointed Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Rtd) as the state’s administrator during the period.
Reacting on his X (Twitter) page, Falz rejected the move, arguing that the Nigerian Constitution does not empower the president to suspend a sitting governor.
“There is ABSOLUTELY NO LAW that allows a president to SUSPEND a governor. A Governor is elected into office and may only be removed by impeachment,” he wrote.
He further questioned the justification for the emergency declaration, asking, “Is Rivers State at war? Is there an actual breakdown of public order? Is there a threat to the existence of the Federation?”
