The Adamawa and Taraba Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, worth over ₦72.6 million.
Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday at the command headquarters in Yola, Comptroller Garba Bashir attributed the seizure to intensified efforts to protect the nation’s borders and combat illicit trans-border smuggling.
According to Bashir, the intercepted petrol was being smuggled to Cameroon through the River Benue waterways. He revealed that the operation was carried out through intelligence sharing, advanced technology, and coordinated border management.
“Our operatives have dealt another heavy blow to smugglers. The Adamawa and Taraba command under my watch will be a dead zone for smuggling,” he declared.
Bashir further disclosed that customs officers raided the Jimeta waterside, popularly known as Bakin Kogi, around 3:30 a.m., where they discovered 240 drums of 220 liters each, neatly arranged for transport across the border.
He warned smugglers and economic saboteurs to abandon illegal trade and embrace legitimate business, stating that the customs service remains committed to cracking down on smuggling networks to safeguard the nation’s economy.
