The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has described food insecurity as a major national challenge that requires urgent intervention from all levels of government.
Speaking on Tuesday while addressing the House Committee on Food Security and Malnutrition and the National Legislative Network on Nutrition and Food Security in Abuja, Abbas urged both the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly to use legislative tools to combat hunger and malnutrition across the country.
Abbas emphasized that food insecurity remains one of Nigeria’s biggest problems, and the parliament has a crucial role in alleviating the burden on citizens.
He commended the committee’s efforts, noting that their work has gained nationwide recognition and adoption by all 36 State Houses of Assembly.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the House Committee on Food Security, Chinedu Okafor, stressed the importance of expanding discussions on food security beyond Abuja.
He highlighted ongoing engagements with state legislatures to domesticate federal laws on nutrition and food security.
Okafor also revealed that the newly established National Legislative Network on Nutrition and Food Security is set to meet with Vice President Kashim Shettima to further address food insecurity in the country.
