The Minister of Works, Sen. David Umahi, has clarified that President Bola Tinubu did not recommend any company for the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project.
Speaking during an inspection of the project in Lagos on Saturday, Umahi explained that the contract was awarded to Hitech Construction Company Ltd based on legal procurement processes.
“There are three types of procurement allowed by law: restrictive procurement, selective/competitive bidding, and open bidding,” he said.
According to Umahi, the government initially sought companies with at least five concrete pavers, a requirement that was rare in Nigeria at the time. Hitech was selected due to its experience, including the reconstruction of the Oworonshoki-Apapa Road.
He further stated that the project’s second section was opened to selective bidding, where multiple companies competed, and Hitech emerged as the winner. The same process was applied for Sections 3A and 3B.
“We have followed due process and remained within the limits of the Procurement Act. There is no corruption in this project; everything has been transparent,” Umahi assured.
