The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, has commended the Zumunta Association USA for its generous donation of £250,000 worth of afforestation technology and its efforts to support Nigerian students in higher education.
The association’s initiative, launched in Awka, aims to provide scholarships to undergraduate students pursuing degrees in Engineering, Medicine, and Computer Science across various Nigerian universities.
Speaking on behalf of NIDCOM’s Chairman, Mr. Abiodun Akanbi, Head of Programme Development at the commission, emphasized that this support would boost Nigeria’s agricultural sector and empower young minds.
“The collaboration between the Nigerian government and organizations like Zander Corporation and Zumunta Association USA is crucial in advancing education, combating desertification, and strengthening national development,” Akanbi stated.
Zumunta Association USA President, Mr. Sunday Bitrus, highlighted that the scholarship initiative is rooted in economic empowerment and is free from religious, political, or ethnic biases.
He noted that, as a native of Nasarawa State, he felt a personal responsibility to support students in their pursuit of higher education.
The initiative has awarded scholarships to students in Katsina, Borno, and Sokoto states, covering tuition fees and other educational expenses.
In addition, five hectares of land have already been prepared for the deployment of afforestation technology, which was also donated by Zander Corporation as part of their collaboration with Nigeria’s efforts to combat desertification.
The event in Awka was attended by the General Officer Commanding 2 Division, Maj.-Gen. Obinna Onubogu, the Kano State House of Assembly, and former presidents of Zumunta Association USA.
Moreso, several beneficiaries, expressed their gratitude, stating that the financial aid would significantly support their academic aspirations.
