Army Chief Urges Battalion Commanders To Lead by Example In Strengthening National Security

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has called on battalion commanders to exhibit exemplary leadership to enhance the Nigerian Army’s effectiveness in tackling emerging security threats.

Speaking at the recently concluded First Commanding Officers’ Workshop 2025, held at the Headquarters of 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Ibadan, Oluyede emphasized the critical role of battalion commanders as the link between operational and tactical command levels.

According to a statement by the Director of Army Public Relations, Maj.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, Oluyede urged commanders to uphold responsibility, accountability, and moral courage in leading their troops in both combat and peacetime.

He further called on them to stay committed to addressing security challenges in their areas of responsibility while maintaining unwavering loyalty to the government and the constitution.

Commending the Chief of Training (Army), Maj.-Gen. Sadiq Ndalolo, for organizing the workshop, Oluyede also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his continuous support in transforming the Nigerian Army.

While addressing troops, the Army Chief praised their dedication in tackling security challenges and reassured them that their welfare remains a top priority. He pledged improved access to combat gear, better accommodation, and enhanced financial support, including soft loan schemes and increased allowances.

During his visit, Oluyede inaugurated key infrastructure projects, including the 2 Division Petroleum, Oil, and Lubricants Station and a Military Police Holding Facility. He also approved the immediate rehabilitation of key officers’ mess facilities in the cantonment.

Earlier, the General Officer Commanding 2 Division, Maj.-Gen. Obinna Onubogu, highlighted that the workshop aimed to enhance battalion commanders’ leadership skills and strategic planning to improve operational efficiency across all theatres of operations.
