Former Kaduna State Governor Nasiru El-Rufai revealed that he left the All Progressives Congress (APC) with the full knowledge and consent of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
El-Rufai announced his defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) on Monday, citing internal issues within the APC that the current leadership was unwilling to address.
In an interview, El-Rufai emphasized that he regularly seeks Buhari’s counsel on major decisions, including his exit from the APC. “I left the APC with his full knowledge. I visited him on a Friday and informed him of my decision to leave the party,” El-Rufai stated.
He also recalled seeking Buhari’s input on key appointments during his tenure as governor, including reviewing his commissioner nominees to ensure none had spoken against the former president.
“After going through the list, he nodded his approval and offered prayers. I consult with him in all I do,” El-Rufai added.
