UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell has declared that a strong new national climate plan would “supercharge the Nigerian economy,” building on the country’s climate leadership and economic progress.
During his four-day visit to Nigeria, Stiell met with senior government officials, civil society, and business leaders to discuss how ambitious climate action can drive economic growth, protect the environment, and power innovation.
At a symposium in Lagos, Stiell emphasized that bold climate action is vital to avert disastrous human and economic impacts, but also to seize vast benefits for Nigeria and its people.
He highlighted several key points which include Clean Energy and Sustainable Agriculture.
According to him, this can create jobs, attract foreign investment, and strengthen Nigeria’s global competitiveness.
He added that countries that invest in their people and strengths will reap the biggest benefits of the $2 trillion global clean energy boom.
“Nigeria’s vast mangrove forests can act as a natural defense against climate impacts, and expanding and restoring these ecosystems can drive sustainable economic growth, he added.
Stiell also stressed the need for more international finance to flow to Nigeria from public and private sources.
