The local government administration in Osun State has taken a dramatic turn, with newly elected chairmen and councillors under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) filing a lawsuit against their All Progressives Congress (APC) counterparts elected in 2022.
The suit, filed at the Osun State High Court of Justice, Ikirun Division, seeks an order to eject the APC chairmen and councillors from council secretariats and prevent further forceful takeovers.
The Inspector-General of Police, Commissioner of Police, Osun State Command, Director-General of the DSS, and Commandant General of the NSCDC are also joined in the suit.
In a separate suit filed by the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) at the Osun State High Court of Justice, Ilesa Division, the union seeks to restrain the APC officials from imposing themselves as chairmen and councillors and interfering with the running of local government councils.
The crisis stems from conflicting interpretations of court judgments, with senior lawyers disagreeing on the validity of the APC officials’ tenure.
The APC officials claim their election was validated by the Court of Appeal, while the PDP and NULGE argue that the Federal High Court’s judgment nullifying the 2022 local government elections remains binding.
