A devastating building collapse occurred on Oriwu Street in the Lekki area of Lagos on Tuesday, resulting in the loss of two lives and injuring several others.
The two-storey building with a penthouse, which was under construction, caved in around 4 pm, trapping labourers working on the site.
Emergency responders swiftly sprang into action, rescuing 14 people from the debris and rushing them to Lagos Island General Hospital for treatment.
The two bodies were recovered at approximately 7:45 pm.
CSP Benjamin Hudenyin, spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, confirmed the incident and stated that operatives were immediately deployed to the scene to provide security for the ongoing rescue operation.
The cause of the collapse remains unknown, but this incident bears a grim resemblance to previous building collapses in Lagos, such as the 2016 incident that claimed 34 lives.
