Rivers State Crisis Deepens: Assembly Demands Removal of Commissioners

The Rivers State House of Assembly has intensified its efforts to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara, with Speaker Martins Amaewhule demanding the removal of 19 commissioners and political appointees who weren’t screened by the Assembly.

The Speaker also requested a fresh list of nominees for proper screening, citing “illegal appointments” made by the governor without legislative approval.

The crisis between Governor Fubara and the Assembly has been escalating over appointments and governance in the state.

Amaewhule specifically criticized the governor’s failure to forward Dagogo Iboroma’s name for screening as Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, citing contraventions of the 1999 Constitution.

However, Commissioner for Environment Sydney Tambari responded that the lawmakers were overstepping their bounds, adding that all commissioners were screened by the previous Speaker, Edison Ehie, who was recognized by the court as the authentic speaker.

Tambari argued that the governor cannot send a fresh list of nominees to the Assembly, as the demand has been overtaken by events.

The situation is becoming increasingly heated, with the Assembly’s actions potentially leading to the impeachment of Governor Fubara.
