Nigeria’s House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to strengthen waste management strategies to combat environmental pollution and associated health risks.
This call to action follows the adoption of a motion sponsored by Julius Pondi, representing Burutu Federal Constituency, Delta State Delta State, during plenary on Tuesday in Abuja.
Presenting the motion titled “Waste Pollution and the Management of Its Impacts on Health and Environment,” Pondi lamented the growing challenges Nigerians face in handling waste disposal, particularly in the oil and gas sector and manufacturing industries.
He noted that ineffective waste management endangers lives, especially in communities where industrial activities take place.
Key contributors to environmental pollution include hazardous industrial discharges, gas flaring, oil spills, and poor domestic waste disposal practices.
Despite existing environmental protection laws, loopholes in enforcement threaten severe health challenges, agricultural decline, and environmental degradation.
The House urged the Federal Government to step up enforcement of environmental laws and called on state and local governments to collaborate with relevant agencies to ensure safer and more sustainable waste disposal methods.
A nationwide survey will be conducted to assess environmental pollution and evaluate compliance with existing waste management regulations.
