Lagos Assembly Speaker Mojisola Meranda Steps Down After 49 Days In Office

Mojisola Meranda has resigned as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, effective Monday, March 3, 2025.

Her resignation was announced during a special plenary session, where she read out her resignation letter.

Meranda’s tenure was brief, having assumed office on January 13, 2025, after the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa. Despite the short time, lawmakers praised her leadership, citing her ability to foster a positive atmosphere in the Assembly.

The resignation comes after a meeting with high-ranking All Progressives Congress members to address the leadership crisis that began when Obasa was removed due to alleged misconduct.

Obasa had rejected his removal, claiming improper procedure and militarization of the assembly complex.

Meranda’s resignation was accompanied by the resignation of all principal officers appointed with her. The House has commenced the process of electing a new Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
