TETFUND’s Executive Secretary, Mr. Sonny Echono, has called on federal and state governments to grant full autonomy to universities.
This call was made during a convocation lecture at Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, where Echono emphasized the importance of university autonomy in maintaining quality education and fostering academic growth.
Echono argued that universities need autonomy to carry out their core mandates of teaching, research, and community service effectively.
He also highlighted that university autonomy and academic freedom are essential for collaboration with industries, alumni, and other educational institutions.
The TETFUND Executive Secretary noted that the current government policy on university autonomy does not guarantee full freedom, as it retains control through university governing councils.
Echono urged the government to grant universities more autonomy to enhance infrastructure, collaborate globally, and ultimately foster quality education for national growth.
In support of Echono’s call, the Vice-Chancellor of Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Prof. Abayomi Fasina, commended TETFUND’s continued support in promoting the university’s development, despite economic challenges.
