Tinubu Signs Bills Establishing Universities In Iragbiji And Iyin Ekiti

President Bola Tinubu has given his seal of approval to two new universities in Nigeria.

On Thursday, February 20, 2025, he assented to bills establishing the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies in Iragbiji, Osun State, and the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences in Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State.

These specialized institutions are expected to address the educational needs of Nigerians, drive research and innovation, and contribute to the country’s economic growth and development.

They will also serve as training grounds for developing professionals in agriculture, science, and technology, enhancing Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global economy.

This move brings the total number of approved federal universities in Nigeria to 65, in addition to 63 state universities and 149 private universities, according to the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Also, this development comes on the heels of President Tinubu’s approval of the Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET) in Rivers State on February 3, 2025.

He also consented to the takeover of a forfeited private university in Southern Kaduna, which will be transformed into a federal university.
