Nigeria’s Former Military Leader Babangida Acknowledges Abiola’s Victory

Former Nigerian military head of state, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, has finally acknowledged that the late Chief Moshood Abiola won the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

This revelation is contained in Babangida’s autobiography, “A Journey in Service,” which was launched in Abuja on Thursday.

According to Babangida, Abiola secured the majority of votes and the required geographical spread to be declared president.

He described the annulment of the election as the most challenging decision of his life, but expressed relief that former President Muhammadu Buhari posthumously recognized Abiola’s victory and honored him with the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR) title.

Babangida’s admission confirms what many Nigerians have long believed: that Abiola won the election fair and square. This revelation is a significant acknowledgment of Nigeria’s complex political history.

The June 12 election was a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s history, with Abiola’s victory representing a break from the country’s traditional ethnic and regional divisions.
