Nigeria’s Federal Government has announced plans to move most electricity consumers to Band A, ensuring a minimum of 20 hours of electricity supply daily.
This goal was revealed by the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Energy, Olu Verheijen, during an interview.
Currently, Band A customers, who make up about 15% of the population, are typically high-income households or commercial establishments that can afford higher tariffs and prioritize reliable power supply.
To achieve this goal, the government plans to ensure all customers are metered, improve cash flow to drive investments, and make the power sector more viable for both distribution companies and customers.
This announcement comes on the heels of a major milestone in Nigeria’s power sector, with the Transmission Company of Nigeria achieving a new peak power generation of 5,543.20 megawatts on February 14, 2025.
The company also reported a significant achievement in energy distribution, with the Maximum Daily Energy reaching an unprecedented 125,159.48MWH.
The government’s plan to move most consumers to Band A is part of its efforts to energize the country, provide electricity to underserved and unserved communities, and improve the overall power sector.
