Violence Erupts In Osun State As APC, PDP Battle For Local Government Supremacy

Tension rises high in Osun State, Nigeria, following a dramatic turn of events. The All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmen are pushing to reclaim their offices in local government councils, citing a recent Court of Appeal ruling that they claim reinstates them.

This development has led to a tense standoff, with reports of hooded gunmen invading local government council secretariats. The situation is complicated by the fact that both the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are attempting to take control.

The roots of this conflict date back to October 15, 2022, when elections were held for local government councils across Osun State. The APC chairmen are now insisting that the Court of Appeal ruling validates their claim to office.

Also, recalling that both parties have been laying claim to control of the third tier of government, as the APC claimed that the Court of Appeal judgement delivered last week has reinstated the sacked elected council chairmen and councillors, while the State Government said the election was nullified by the Federal High Court in Osogbo.

It was learnt that in the early hours of Monday, APC members moved to the various council secretariats with a bid to take over control but were resisted by some gun-wielding hoodlums.

Also, the APC attempt to take over at Boluwaduro was resisted by hoodlums while both APC and PDP members were resisted by police from gaining access to the council secretariat in Olorunda local government.

A traveller along the Ikire-Ibadan expressway, Tunde Shamsudeen, told Vanguard that hooded gunmen were shooting sporadically into the air in front of the council secretariat in Irewole, Ikire, which is right on the express road.

The situation forced motorists to make a detour at Ikoyi to avoid being caught in a crossfire.

It was also gathered that APC gained access to some council secretariats in the state, though workers did not report to duty in line with the directive of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in the state.
