The Nigerian Police Force has denied allegations of 3,907 missing firearms, stating that the audit report from 2019 is misleading and inaccurate.
According to the police, the report’s findings do not reflect the current status of their armouries.
The police acknowledged challenges during periods of civil unrest, which led to the loss of arms, but emphasized that efforts have been made to account for the missing arms, with many recovered and returned to the force’s armouries.
The police also clarified that some arms were issued to personnel for operational purposes, which may have led to misconceptions about the accuracy of audit reports.
The Force has a statutory and annual internal auditing process to ensure controlled movement and proper accountability of arms.
The Senate Committee on Public Accounts had raised concerns about the missing firearms, citing the Auditor-General’s 2019 report, but the police maintained that the allegations are unfounded.
