The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is embroiled in a fresh crisis after the Abia State chapter suspended Senator Adolphus Wabara, the chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT), over alleged anti-party activities.
The suspension was triggered by Wabara’s reported comments that Governor Alex Otti of the Labour Party had secured a second term, just five months into his first term.
The Abia State PDP cited provisions of the party’s constitution (2017 as amended) to justify Wabara’s suspension, barring him from holding any party office and removing him as BoT chairman.
However, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP swiftly voided Wabara’s suspension, describing the action as “null, void, and of no effect whatsoever.”
The NWC argued that the Abia State chapter lacked the power to suspend or take disciplinary action against a member of the National Executive Committee (NEC) without due recourse to the NWC.
Also, Former Deputy National Chairman of the party, Chief Bode George, condemned the suspension, labeling it an “insult” and an “affront” that should not stand.
The development has sparked a fresh wave of infighting within the PDP, with the Abia State chapter standing by its decision and the NWC insisting on its nullification.
Notably, the crisis is likely to have far-reaching implications for the party’s unity and prospects in future elections.
