The national grid collapsed for the first time in 2025 today Wednesday, February 12, at 11:34 am, leaving Nigerians in a blackout.
This incident marks a continuation of the power disruptions and blackouts experienced in 2024, which saw the grid collapse at least 12 times.
The collapse affected the power supply in the franchise areas of Electricity Distribution Companies, including:
Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC)
Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC)
According to the AEDC, efforts to restore the power supply are ongoing, with gradual restoration already commenced. The company assured that it is working closely with relevant stakeholders to fully restore electricity as soon as the grid is stabilized.
However, it’s note worthy that in 2024, Nigeria recorded multiple incidents of national grid collapses, with the most recent one occurring on December 11 October 2024 was the month with the most incidents, with at least four grid collapses reported.
