Pope Francis has strongly criticized US President Donald Trump’s mass deportations of undocumented migrants, calling it a “major crisis” that damages human dignity.
In a letter to US bishops, the Pope urged Catholics and others to reject narratives that discriminate against migrants and refugees, instead promoting a welcoming and inclusive approach.
While acknowledging a nation’s right to defend itself and keep communities safe, Pope Francis emphasized that mass deportations harm people who have fled extreme poverty, violence, and persecution.
He warned that such actions leave individuals vulnerable and defenseless.
The Pope also expressed concerns about Trump’s pledge to carry out the largest deportation campaign in US history, calling it a “calamity.”
He stressed that authentic rule of law requires dignified treatment of all people, especially the poorest and most marginalized.
Pope Francis encouraged the development of policies that regulate orderly and legal migration, but emphasized that these policies must be based on equality and human dignity, rather than force and privilege.
