The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is speaking out against governors who abandon their states to live in Abuja, while their constituents face hardship.
NLC President Joe Ajaero expressed his concerns during a town hall meeting in Kogi State, where he noted that most governors are absent from their states, having traveled to Abuja.
Ajaero emphasized that this trend affects governance and deprives people of the benefits of democracy.
He also criticized the government’s plan to increase telecom tariffs, which would further burden workers already struggling with high living costs.
The NLC leadership visited Kogi State to commission 10 Compressed Natural Gas buses aimed at easing transportation issues.
During the meeting, workers presented their problems and demands, including:
Proscription of Labour Unions: Workers criticized Governor Yahaya Bello’s administration for banning labour unions in state-owned tertiary institutions, which the NLC president argued is unconstitutional.
Non-Implementation of
Annual Salary Increase: Workers demanded the implementation of annual salary increases.
Non-Provision of Housing: Workers requested provision of housing for workers.
Shortage of Teachers: Workers highlighted the shortage of teachers in primary and junior secondary schools.
Furthermore, the NLC president assured workers that their concerns would be taken to the governor, emphasizing the need for governors to be accountable to their constituents.
