Senator Nurudeen Ademola Adeleke, the Governor of Osun State, is set to launch the remodeling of the Osogbo Township Stadium on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, at 11:00 AM.
This groundbreaking ceremony marks the beginning of a major infrastructural project aimed at transforming the facility into a premier sporting hub in Nigeria. The project is part of Governor Adeleke’s administration’s top priorities, focusing on upgrading the stadium to modern standards.
Governor Adeleke will be joined by his deputy, Prince Kola Adewusi, and the Commissioner for Sports, Prince Kola Adewusi, at the event. The ceremony will also feature a cash award presentation to athletes who have represented the state with distinction in various competitions.
The Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports and Special Needs, Mr. Layi Adesiyan, and the General Manager of the Osun State Sports Council, Mr. Rotimi Dunmoye, disclosed these details during a media briefing on Friday.
The remodeling project, approved by Governor Adeleke in late 2024, is expected to be fully completed by mid-2026. Upon completion, the stadium will feature state-of-the-art facilities, including two artificial turf fields, one grass pitch, an artificial hockey pitch, a multipurpose indoor sports hall, two tartan tracks, a squash court, a swimming pool, hostels, a hotel, and a shopping complex. The main bowl pitch will also have covered seating to enhance spectator experience.
Mr. Rotimi Dunmoye further explained the economic and social benefits of the project, stating, “This upgrade will not only boost sports development but also stimulate local economic activities. It will attract athletes, tourists, and businesses, contributing to the overall growth of Osun State.”
The flag-off event will be attended by cabinet members, members of the Osun State House of Assembly led by Speaker Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, and the Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Hon. Abiola Jeremiah Awoyeye, alongside other key stakeholders in the sports industry.
The Osun State Sports Council has also called on sports enthusiasts, athletes, and residents to join in celebrating this historic milestone. “This project marks a new era for sports in Osun State, and we invite everyone to be part of this transformative journey,” said Mrs. Funmilayo Moradeyo, Chief Public Relations Officer of the Osun State Sports Council.
Furthermore, the remodeling of the Osogbo Township Stadium is expected to significantly enhance the state’s capacity to host national and international sporting events, further solidifying its reputation as a hub for sports excellence.
